Why small is more satisfying

In an era where cruise ships keep getting bigger and bigger, there is something compelling about “small”.  As an incentive travel planner, I encourage clients to move from mega ships to smaller vessels for the most satisfying travel experience.

With a capacity under 500 passengers, cruising on a small ship offers a sense of style and comfort that only yacht owners enjoy. Other than expedition ships, small ships are luxurious, but not necessarily formal. Think casual elegance with a relaxed ambiance!

Although small ships appear to be more expensive at first glance, they actually offer a better value because of their all-inclusive pricing.  It is important to recognize that mega ship promotions are misleading in that they don’t disclose all the extra expenses and the rate is always for the lowest cabin category. I have known people whose bar bill at the end of a cruise on a mega ship was more than they paid for their cabin!

Consider these advantages of small ship cruising:

Unique Ports of Call – Smaller ships are able to visit places that large cruise ships cannot.  This enables you to explore secluded harbors and see places you would otherwise never get to visit.

Personalized Service – There is a much higher crew to guest ratio on small ships, and this category of cruise vessel attracts a higher quality of employee - one who is well-trained and understands the concept of fine service.

No Tipping – An important part of “all inclusive” is that gratuities are covered in your base price. In addition, the staff is better paid on luxury ships and as such, not reliant on gratuities for their income. You will find the staff to be very professional and will not accept tips even when offered.

Free Beverages – Small, luxury cruise lines do not charge for drinks – at the bar, in the restaurants, or in the stateroom.  You will have a fridge fully-stocked with your choice of beverages at no charge. On the mainstream cruise ships, you pay for soft drinks, specialty coffee, wine, beer and cocktails…. even bottled water!

Amenities – Features such as designer bath products, fine linens, robes, in-suite bar, and Wi-Fi throughout, make you feel like you really are on your own yacht. Gratifying luxuries and personal service soars into the sublime!

Think of it as “Yachting – not cruising!”  Enjoy…it’s all included!
