Having hosted the world’s major sporting events, Korea’s sporting legacy continues to pay economic and social dividends which are both tangible and intangible. The 1988 Summer Olympics opened the door to a succession of events which have raised Korea’s profile globally and also placed the destination firmly on the sports tourism map.
It was recently announced that the ‘World Ski Awards’ has unveiled the elite resorts and hospitality providers that have been elected as finalists in its inaugural programme. World Ski Awards is the first ever programme to acknowledge and reward the finest brands in the global ski hospitality industry. The exclusive awards programme features four “blue riband” categories: best ski resort, best hotel, best boutique hotel and best chalet in the top 20 ski nations.
Within the cast of finalists some of ‘South Korea’s’ finest ski resorts and hotels have been nominated. This speaks volumes about the quality of the country’s ski product and reminds everyone that Korea will host the Winter Olympics in 2018 in Pyeongchang. http://worldskiawards.com/nominees/south-korea
Many of the venues from Korea elected by the World Ski Awards, are fantastic venues for events in a very unique and natural environment. As Korea marches forward towards the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang many of these facilities will be in high demand and so it is worth meeting planners improving their knowledge about these products.
Korea became ‘Asia’s Leading Sport Tourism Destination’ in 2012 at the ‘World Travel Awards’ in Singapore and has emerged as a leading force in the ‘sports tourism’ arena. This year the destination has already hosted the ‘Pyeongchang Special Olympics’, is on the verge of welcoming the ‘World Rowing Championships’ to Chungju and looking forward to another F1 race in Yeongam and the opening of a new Taekwondo Park in Muju.
The worldwide voting process will begin at 08:00 (GMT) on Monday 26th August. The winners will be announced at the inaugural World Ski Awards Ceremony in Kitzbühel, Austria on 16th November 2013 and the hope will be that Korea can continue to be a gold medal contender!
